Dimmable LED Bulbs
Dimmable vs Non-Dimmable
First of all, LED bulbs use a lot less energy than other varieties but they won’t necessarily work with your current dimmer switch. The key is to make sure you choose the right bulbs for your needs. You should always check the packaging to find out whether a particular product is dimmable and will work with your switch.
Being able to dim LED lights is useful. In normal illumination, they can provide strong lighting but sometimes you just want a more subtle effect. If you’ve been using a dimmable switch with a fluorescent light, you’d have found operation all fairly uniform and it didn’t matter which bulb you had put in. You will have to match your existing switch technology with the right bulb and it may well perform slightly differently from what you have been used to in the past.
One option, of course, is to change your dimmer switch to one that is specifically designed to be used with LED dimmable bulbs. This doesn’t cost a great deal but you should ensure that you get a qualified electrician in to do the job and can deliver great cost savings over the years.
The Benefits of Dimmable LED Bulbs
You don’t always want a bright, shining light. Sometimes, you just want a faint glow, for example, when you’re watching TV or snuggling down in front of the fire on a winter’s night. Other times you need a bit more light so you can see what you’re doing. Dimmable lights give you that great flexibility and are suitable for all areas around the home, including the living room, bedrooms and the bathroom.
Dimmable lights can also help you further save on electricity costs when you turn them down. LED lights are already the most economic bulbs on the market today so adding the ability to turn them up and down just increases their efficiency.
The benefits of changing from your current lights to LED are well-known. First of all, you’re using less electricity and lowering your utility bills (20% of most home bills come from lighting). Secondly, you’ve got a product that lasts a lot longer than other bulbs on the market.
Choosing Dimmable Lights
The excellent news is that you can get dimmable LED bulbs of almost any type online, from the traditional bayonet variety you normally find in ceiling fittings to screw-in bulbs as well as the increasingly popular pronged ones that can act as spotlights. You can also get different colours and warmth ranges to suit each room in your home. You can even find retro vintage style dimmable lights that look just like the old fashioned tungsten bulbs of old.
